An Evening With Labelle
Thursday, January 29, 2009 8:00 PM
Door Time: 7:00 PM
"Labelle" will perform at the Nokia LA Live Theater. In the mid 70s, "Labelle" was one of the most popular groups in the world. The ladies had a soulful mix on stage, along with unforgettable costumes, feathers and platforms included.
The group split in 1976, but Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash remained good friends. They recently decided it was time to bring back "Labelle."
It's a sound that instantly brings you back to the mid 1970s, when a trio of very recognizable women hit the scene.
"When we sing together, we see what we have 32 years ago," Labelle said. "We still have it."
That "it" is a blend of soul, funk and a harmonic mix. It's something "Labelle" is bringing back to the Apollo Theater in their first full live concert in more than three decades.
Friends since teenagers, they're now in their 60s. They reunited in 2005, recording a tribute to the late Rosa Parks.
They admit it just felt right, being back together. The rest is history.
Their new album, "Back to Now," features works by Lenny Kravitz, Wyclef Jean and legendary producers Gamble and Huff. It also includes "Without You in My Life," secretly written by Hendryx for Patti and Sarah.
"I wrote it at a very cathartic experience about the groups and getting back together," Hendryx said. "And we were at Pat's house, rehearsing and sitting around the piano, and I played it for Pat and Sarah."
They agreed it was once again time for "Labelle."
"I love it when she rocks, because I roll when she rocks," Labelle said. "Got it like that, got it like that, a gift to each other."
And they're still able to rock their classic headliner, "Lady Marmalade."
An Evening with Edward Albee
Described by The New Yorker as “the greatest living playwright,” Edward Albee has defined modern American theater for nearly five decades with his provocative, controversial and groundbreaking plays. Lauded as “one of the eternal innovators” in American drama, this three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner challenges his audiences with stories that express the bone-simple, shattering truth of the human experience, perhaps best exemplified by his 1962 masterpiece Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Still as prolific and relevant as ever, Albee makes his Royce Hall debut in a fascinating discussion about the power of the arts as a catalyst for change. He believes that art should be dangerous, that it should reveal all of our shortcomings and complacency, hopefully inspiring us to live our lives more fully. He also explores charged topics such as government repression, censorship in the arts, and cultural literacy.
This performance is sponsored, in part, by the Royce Center Circle membership of Alice & Norman Tulchin
Dave and Clarice Johnson are in their second decade of marriage. Dave’s dreams of major league baseball success were dashed by an injury in college, leading him to a steady but unfulfilling career as the head of a small construction firm.
Clarice is basking in the glow of real estate stardom, creating a life that revolves around her rise to the top. She has become blind to Dave’s needs, the most important being his desire to become a father and start a family with her. They face a total disruption in their lives when a car crash seriously injures Clarice, whose meddling mother, Mary, blames Dave for her daughter’s leg injuries and derailed career.
Help comes in the form of kind-hearted physical therapist and single mom Julie Sawyer, whose son Bryson is coached by Dave and his pals Brock and Tree in Little League baseball. Though Clarice is helped by Julie’s care, she becomes concerned that her constant criticism of Dave has pushed her husband away--possibly into the arms of the empathetic Julie. Soon Dave and Clarice must face a married couple’s most serious questions: are we really meant to be together, and if we are, how do we fight to keep what we have built as man and wife?

From the wonders of Cirque du Soleil to imported Broadway shows, production shows have elaborate stages and larger casts performing a mixture of acrobatics, dancing, music, comedy and more.
Elton John, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler ... big names and big acts can be found here. Headline shows spotlight a single performer, though they may also have backup singers and dancers.
Improv, stand-up, prop comedy, political humor -- audience members are treated to comedians who will have them laughing so hard they'll forget what they lost at the blackjack tables.
